The Science
We humans are an engineering marvel! In our simplest version we are a complex set of interwoven relationships involving the:
- Physical structural elements (bones, skin, muscles, vessels, organs, etc.);
- Ability of these structural elements to be moved and independently function;
- Ability to move in unison with each other.
How amazing is it that all our discrete systems with their varied physical constructs and properties can successfully work as a whole!
The science tying all of these physical systems together is Physics, which is the focus of the Bridging® technique.
Key Physics principles
Key Physics principles revolve around regulation and the need for stable structures in order to support movement. The three aspects enabling regulation are the pressure, temperature and volume of the structure. These change with position, gravity and age.
The basic concept behind Bridging® is we physically support the organization and regulation of the body’s structure using subtle movements to organize the intra and inter-system regulation. As regulation changes, the entire system shifts to a more efficient level of function.
Many specific principles of Physics are on display in the body, including:
- Statics and Dynamics
- Fluids (regulation and dynamics)
- Structural, Mechanical and Material properties
- Thermodynamics
- Acoustical
- Signal Theory
- Transmission Properties
These are just some of the principles of Physics embedded in and changed by Bridging®. Although we do not go into the mathematical details in our courses, we do discuss and apply the concepts.
Developmental Sequences Matters Immensely
The other aspect of science embedded in the Bridging® technique is the recognition that the Physics of our bodies change from conception to birth through growth and life with the overarching goal of survival.
Just as code is the basis of computer programming, the tiniest movements learned in the first months of life are the foundational code to how we move at any age.
In the Bridging® technique we assess and work with the fundamental micro-movements; these must be present at all stages of life. We explore common ways the movements may be interfered with during prenatal development, birth, growth, injury, illness, and trauma.
There is an order to the way the body grows and develops with key functions emerging at different developmental stages. Using Bridging® we provide a ‘time-out’ where the missed skills can be inserted and re-integrated. Miraculously even prenatal and birth-related movement gaps can be restored.
Sensory System Re-Integration
An important aspect to all of the early movement development is the integration with guiding sensory systems—auditory, vestibular, visual and proprioceptive. These sensory systems tightly react to guide us to react safely in our environment. Many factors, including injury, trauma, and health procedures can disrupt sensory motor integration. Bridging® enables you to re-weave movement and sensory reactions back together.
The Bridging® technique creates a pathway to restore any disrupted relationships from any point in time, even if they happened at birth. It also provides a framework to re-assemble developmental glitches occurring from genetic or environmental causes.
Putting People Back Together!
So many science principles yet the courses take a functional rather than theoretical perspective. You learn the relevant principles and how they affect movement, regulation and development. Best of all, you learn how to apply Bridging® to put these in better working order!
