Sleep … the Magic Elixir of CALM

Finding more calm has been a frequent theme for us this year. Even so, sometimes we forget the obvious.

Sleep is 25-33% of our day, and it has a huge impact of our ability to stay level-headed. It’s a big deal. In fact the sleep industry is a $30B industry!

Some reminders about the physical and mental importance of sleep:

  • Sleep is essential for muscle healing
  • Sleep is essential for brain health
  • Sleep is recently implicated with dementia

For more on many aspects of sleep, check out this resource.

Connecting Hands Brings Us Together in So Many Ways!

Hands … the bond of a simple grasp

Grasping — what a connection!

As we greet each other in person after so many months, or years, a grasp of the hands is so deeply connecting.

Even more than a hug or kiss, the hands connect us in ways felt but unseen. The skin contact and pressure allow you both to connect in many subtle, yet significant ways. Read more

Hands + Age = Arthritis? No!

Arthritic hands: what else may be the cause?

As the weather gets cooler it seems that our adult joints get stiffer.

We tend to blame our age or the cold, but reduced activity is likely the cause.

There are many studies that show movement is the most effective way to lower pain and improve function, without negative side effects.

Hands are no exception. As fingers swell and stiffen many people look to steroid creams or injections for help. These provide relief, but are not a long term solution.

Here’s another perspective on arthritis, and how BridgingĀ® can help restore your hand function and strength. Read more

Fidget Toys: Helpful or Annoying?

As we shift to spending more time indoors, little things like fidgety fingers become more pronounced and, likely, more annoying.

Sensory fidgets and stress balls can be found everywhere in many shapes, colors, and sizes.

But what do these gadgets really do? And do they even help?

This time I’m not turning to research because I was able to find only one (1!) study on the effectiveness of these gadgets, and it said there was no measurable benefit.

Even so … I’m betting there is more to fidget toys than marketing.

Walking for Calming? Yes!!!

The past 18 months have been stressful in ever-changing ways.

How have you managed to keep yourself pulled together mentally and emotionally?

I found myself walking or running outdoors. Everyday, and often 2-3 times a day.

Anytime I feel a little edgy or unfocused I throw on some shoes and head outside. 15 minutes is usually enough, but an hour can be amazing!

To learn that neuroscience research shows there is something to this correlation was AMAZING!

Does Your Child Have a Challenging Time with Preschool?

How can preschool be hard?

It’s a time you and your child have been waiting for — going to preschool!

But after a month, things are not going so smoothly and you’re wondering, “What can be so hard about preschool, and what can I, as a parent, do?”

Your preschool’s staff can be a great resource. These early childhood development professionals are usually very astute at developmental skill trajectories and can identify if your child may need a little specific help.

There are times when BridgingĀ® can be a great resource too. Scroll down to see more about our newest program that you can do with your child at home.

(Don’t have a preschooler? Your friend or relative who does, would love to get these insights, so please share.)

Is Your Child Struggling in the New School Year?

School called: Refusals, anxiety, poor attention?

It’s that time of year, and I’ve lived it.

I dreaded seeing the school on caller ID because it was never good news.

The emails and calls come from school to discuss performance and behavior. By now the students should have settled into their routines.

Each year, I was hopeful that my son had matured, and the new teacher or new classroom would be just what he needed for a successful year. (This didn’t happen until he was a sophomore in HS.)

The calls changed after the summer when I did a couple sessions of BridgingĀ® with him.

Bike Falls: Are You Still Feeling the Effects?

Bike fall in your past?

When people come in with mystery pain, a common incident in their past is a bike fall. They often say, “I was fine, nothing was broken.”

However, nothing broken doesn’t mean the incident was without lasting consequences.

Often a bike fall, whether recent or a long time ago, is the cause of a rigid core which is creating stress at your hip or shoulder.

Our clients find after their Bridging session, the trauma is cleared, their core relaxes, and the pain or stiffness fade away.

Repeatedly, we hear the phrase “magic”! Read more
